Britain and France fought the 100 Years War. Both benefitedand became more solified countries due to it. This girl, Joan of Arc, claimed to hear the Archangel Michael speak to her. She marched the French troops into battle and helped save French King Charles VII's monarchy. When captured by the British she was burned at the stake. King Charles VII never even attempted to help her. Later the Roman Catholic Church made her saint.
Ivan the Great ran the Mongols out of Russia. More specifically he met at the river and they decided not to fight. He made Moscow the capital and used the Eastern Orthodox Church to help unify the country. He proclaimed himself czar (or tsar) which is the Russian word for caesar. He believed Russia woudl be the Third Rome (1st is Rome, 2nd is Byzantine).
Isabel and Ferdinand united most of Spain simply by getting married. Soon they began a process called the Reconquista, or the movement to take all of Spain and get rid of the Islamics and the Jewish. This was often violent. In the end the loss of the Moors and the Jews also meant a loss of intellect and was not good for Spain.

Only the First Crusade was "successful". Pope Urban II called for fighters after he received a plea for help fromteh Byzantine emperor. Pope Urban promised salvation to all who fought. The ultimate goal was to win Jerusalem the holy city back from the Muslims. Truthfully Pope Urban also hoped bring the eastern church back under the Roman Catholic control.
In the First Crusade, the fighters managed to clumisly and quite luckily gain Jerusalem. They also created four Crusader states you can see in the map. Neither stated in the Crusaders possession for very long.

Saladin, the Muslim leader would take back Jerusalem and hold it against the strong forces from the West (including Richard the Lionhearted, king of England and John's older brother).
In the end, Saladin kept Jeruslam in Islamic hands but offered a truce to the West. He promised the Christians they be allowed safe passage into Jerusalem to worship.

In the 4th Crusade, many Christians made it as far east as Constantinople. Stuck waiting with no money or paycheck, many fighters rioted. Constantinople was looted and sacked by Christian Crusaders - their own allies!

The plague passed through fleas on rats. When it started and people began killing rats, it caused the fleas to migrate: to human hosts.
The Church had already suffered a loss of popularity in the Crusades. When it could not give explanations or provide comfort to the scared it became even less powerful.
Feudalism was also lost. Too many people died and obligations to the land and the vassals were over.
Trade has increased due to the Crusades. People were excited by Middle Eastern goods and markets. The spread of the plague put a temporary slowing to the trade however.

The church was really the only educated peoples. Places like this monastery preserved literature. Thanks to the increased trade from the Crusades, many volumes of literature had been saved by Byzantines and Islamic scholars. The Church scholars then translated the Greek and Arabic into Latin. They also increased learning in universities and topics like philosophy, medcine, and science.
